Bergamo Intermodal Station
With the Orio airport and the future connections to the European rail network, Bergamo is moving towards a transformation and further development of the public transport network. The cornerstone of this new urban transformation is the Bergamo station, which aims to create new links between the territorial and local scales, integrating urbanity, technical innovation, and environmental sustainability.
The project is focused on the creation of public spaces that connect educational and healthcare activities along via Gavazzeni and via Europa with the northern part of the city, while preserving and restoring existing buildings related to the railway system.
The project involves the construction of the new station building, the connecting tunnel between the platforms, the platform coverings, pedestrian overpasses, and other facilities to reach them. There is also a plan to renovate the Marconi square and the historic passenger building.
The new passenger building of the station is designed to meet functional and safety requirements but also aims to be an urban structure that merges with the surrounding environment. The design includes two glass structures protected by a canopy roof, which becomes a distinctive architectural element of the intervention. The continuity between the new elements and the historical structures contributes to the station’s transformation into an urban bridge that connects the two parts of the city.
