The project for the new hospital in Andria is located within a territory with strong environmental peculiarities that the design aimed to respect. The variety of functions hosted by the many buildings of the complex and their different needs for view and natural lighting, is kept together on the external perimeter by an element – a screen or perimeter facede – that gives unity to the complex and registers and represents the diversity of the parts through a series of variation and exchanges with the surrounding landscape.
Thanks to its perimeter, instead of being a mere addition of buildings characterized by individual functions, the new hospital complex is perceived as a clear balanced volume that dialogues with the landscape. The simple geometry perimeter that holds together its various parts is continuously excavated by green courtyards that are both intimate and open to the surrounding landscape. These open spaces constitute the true soul of the project: they are environmental elements obtained “by the subtraction of the form” capable of giving light and views to the interior in proportion to the functions, and at the same time, to become public spaces characterized by different degrees of intimacy or openness.
The new hospital is a dynamic and flexible facility, able to favor the evolution that underlies the development of a modern hospital, as well as to absorb the activity peaks that characterize emergency situations. This policy, now essential for proper design for hospital buildings, it has generated, in terms of urban planning choices, a closely integrated body, endowed with great intrinsic coherence and that allows future developments.
