Designs unveiled for the new Bergamo Station

Last Wednesday, 21st September 2022, before the mayor Giorgio Gori, the Assessore alla Riqualificazione Urbana Francesco Valesini and the developer RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana), the preliminary design for the new Bergamo Station was unveiled to the public.

The project, which aims to establish new connections between the territorial scale and the local dimension of the city of Bergamo, dialogues with the wider urban transformation of Bergamo Porta Sud. In fact, a masteplan of this area was commissioned by Vitali Spa to Cino Zucchi Architetti for Urban Design and to Gobbi Architettura for Urban Strategy and Coordination.

The new Bergamo station will be an intermodal hub allowing users to quickly switch between different means of transport. Furthermore, it will also create a unique sequence of public spaces connecting educational and health activities along via Gavazzeni and via Europa with the northern part of the city.

Following recent examples of railway areas’ revitalisation in Europe, the project tackles the issues of urban regeneration, environmental and landscape reformation and technical and transport innovation.

“We shouldn’t look at the Bergamo station regeneration only as a new connection between different transport systems, but also and above all as the epicenter of a more comprehensive regeneration capable of combining the intensity and liveliness of the urban experience with a new landscape sensitivity based on the values of the environment and nature”– Cino Zucchi.
